Insufficient consumption of fruits and vegetables
The Spanish consume about 489 grams of fruit and vegetables
The World Health Organization (WHO) considers that eating enough fruits and vegetables could save up to 1.7 million lives a year.
The current average consumption of fruits and vegetables worldwide is much lower than recommended by WHO. It is estimated that the consumption of these foods ranges from 100 grams a day in the least developed countries and about 450 grams per day in Western Europe.
The researchers did not provide specific data for Spain, but can be obtained from the first National Survey of Dietary Intake Spanish (ENIDE), which revealed that consume about 489 grams of fruit and vegetables, a figure higher than that observed in many other countries, but below 600 grams recommended reference entities day.
